I think all of us have been driving around town and seen a homeless person or someone who is less fortunate on the side of the road with a sign asking for money or food. And I think all of us want to do something about it but either don't have cash or anything to give. Well this year I have decided that I am going to act on those feelings and be prepared to help them out when I can. It can be as simple as always having cash in your car or making something like these charity packets. These packets are super easy to make and then just have in your car for when you see someone on the side of the road.
Here is what I put into the charity packets:
• Cold weather socks
• Hand and toe warmers
• Toothbrush and tooth paste
• First aid kit
• Protein bar
• Trail mix
• $5 cash
I put all of the supplies into the gallon sized bag and then added a little card that said #LIGHTtheWORLD on it. If you want to use it, you can get a free printable here.
And just for a little added touch and to make it a little more festive, I added some red snowflakes out of vinyl onto the bags.
I put them in the basket and put them in my car to have when I am out about and so I can give them out.
I took my son out to give away the charity packets and we have a sweet story to share because of it.
My husband and I were going to get a quick lunch at McDonalds and when we were leaving, we saw a man on the corner with a sign. We decided to give one of the packets to him. As we were giving one to him, another man with a dog came up to the man. We were in a hurry because I had to pick up my son from school (plus I wanted them to be a part of it too), so we just gave one of the men one. He said "God bless you" and the other man said, "Oh wow!". I picked up my school from school and then we went out looking for the other man that we saw with the dog. We found him on another corner on a different road. When we stopped to give him a packet and I noticed that he was wearing the gloves from the other man's packet. Oh sweet is that?! The other man shared what was inside the packet with this other man. We gave him another packet and you could tell that he was excited to get it. And his dog was excited to smell the food in it. It really warmed my heart to see that there is so much good in the world!
Mormon.org is challenging all of us to #LIGHTtheWORLD with service this December. They have 25 days of service with activities and ideas to help serve everyday. You don't have to do exactly what I did but you can come up with some of your own ideas to serve this holiday season and to be a light in someone's life. And if you do serve, share it with the hashtag #LIGHTtheWORLD or print out my printable and put it onto something. I challenge you to get up and serve this December and make our world a better and happier place! Let's be a little more like Him.
