DIY Foam Minecraft Pickaxe and Sword #Minecraft

July 16, 2014 by Kaysi 11 Comments

My boys’ room is going to be Minecraft and I am having so much fun decorating it.  There still isn’t a ton of things in the stores for Minecraft, so I have to make lots of things (I don’t mind).  The stores do have some sweet foam swords and pickaxes, but they are around $20.  $20?!?!  I seriously could not believe how much they were.  Well I loved the idea of big Minecraft tools, so I made some for my boys’ rooms.  These ones only cost me $1.77 each.  Much better than $20.

This is how I made them:
I an Elmer’s foam board and then drew squares onto it.  Each square is 1.5 inches.

For the colors I used vinyl.  You could easily use paint or markers or a Sharpie, but I wanted to use vinyl for nice clean lines.

I cut the vinyl into 1.5 inch squares.

I then took at a picture online and then started placing the vinyl onto the square.

I cut out the pickaxe with scissors.  It was tough, so I decided to get a hot knife to cut it instead.  Much better.

Here it is all cut out.

I then painted the sides the same color as the vinyl.

And that’s it!  It is actually quite big, as you can tell by comparing it to my 5 year old.

I stuck some command stripes onto the back of it and then put it onto their wall.

Here is the sword.  Pretty awesome, huh?

These make perfect decorations, toys or would be great for Halloween if your child is going as Steve or something else.

The prices in the store are totally crazy. We made one out of styrofoam. Doing the math of the squares was not as easy as I thought it would be. HA!!! Love yours! Perfect for a b-day party!

I made these for my boys awhile back, too! I never thought of using them as decor though…now I need to go make a few more! 🙂

Do I dare show this to my 7-year-old who at this very moment is on the computer watching a Minecraft walkthrough video? If I do, I'm thinking we'll be at Target or Walmart later today buying foam. Might not be such a bad way to spend the afternoon, though!
