Valentine’s Day is coming up soon and I love making fun shirts for my little girl to wear during the holiday. Since the holiday season of Valentine’s Day is relatively short, I wanted to make a shirt that she could wear all year round and on Valentine’s Day. Heart shirts are pretty classic and I love how they look, so I decided to go with that. I love idea of having a fun word within the heart, so I went with beautiful because every girl is beautiful and needs to feel beautiful. Since rose gold is such a pretty color and super popular now, I used a rose gold vinyl to make the shirt and I love how it turned out!
So before I get to the tutorial, I just to tell you that this is not your normal tutorial. I have been crafting for a long time, but I still make a TON of mistakes. Well I did that with the rose gold heat transfer vinyl, I accidentally put the blade setting a little too high and it cut through the plastic, instead of just through the heat transfer. Instead of doing it over, I decided to go with it and make the tutorial and video with it like that because chances are you’ve done that before or you will and you might want to see how to make it work so you don’t waste the vinyl (especially when it’s precious and beautiful vinyl like this rose gold one). So basically the tutorial is the same, it just takes a little longer to put it on the shirt because the plastic is not there to hold it altogether, but as you can see you can still make an adorable shirt!
If you want to see how to make shirts with heat transfer vinyl (where I didn’t mess up, LOL), check out this post.
Here is a quick video to show you the process of making this shirt :).
This is how I made it:
Using my Silhouette CAMEO, I cut out the design on the rose gold vinyl. Make sure you put the shiny side down and you mirror the image before you cut it out. You can get the design here:
So normally when you cut it out, the plastic is kinda like a backing paper and it keeps the design altogether, but since I accidentally cut through the plastic, I used the cutting mat to keep the design together and worked from there. Also if you can see in the picture, that white block thing, it’s a piece of wood that I wrapped around with multi use paper. You heat the block up with the iron and then put it under the shirt and it helps give a nice smooth surface to work on and the heat helps when you weed the vinyl.
Just because it’s fun to show you that everyone makes mistakes and have craft fails (which sometimes you can make work, sometimes you can’t…). Here is the sheet of the rose gold vinyl, with the heart cut out. See how it’s on the edge too?? Yup, there is a little section that didn’t get cut but it’s not noticeable (unless you put it out, just like I did…. I have a habit of doing that!).
Once I got all of the excess vinyl off, in this case, the word beautiful, I then put the heart onto the shirt. I did this by using the cutting mat like transfer paper, and I slowly peeled the mat back leaving the vinyl on the shirt. As you can see, the little pieces for the loops of the letters are missing, those are still on the mat and I put those on later.
I then ironed the heart onto the shirt. Here is a nice chart that tells you the heat settings and times, based on what kind of heat transfer vinyl you are using. So the vinyl can move, so you will want to use your other hand to hold the vinyl down while you iron it.
Next I put those little pieces in the loops back in and ironed those on using the multi use paper. Multi use paper is your best friend when it comes to heat transfer vinyl, I use it almost every time I make a shirt!
Once the heart is all ironed on, you peel off the plastic. If it starts to come up, then you iron it again real quick. Just go slowly so you don’t ripped the whole thing off. Also make sure you get all the plastic off, including on the little pieces in the letters.
And that’s it! Isn’t it so fun and pretty?! I love the rose gold heat transfer vinyl! Even though I messed up, it still looks great! And really it only took me 5 -10 minutes longer, so it really wasn’t that big of deal, so if it happens to you, don’t stress out :).
I found this adorable outfit and I knew that I had to get it! I used a white shirt instead of a gray shirt but I love how it all goes together.
As you can see, the rose gold vinyl is such a pretty color!
And here is my beautiful girl in it! I just love it and she was so excited about it!
