Hello Keeping it Simple Readers! Halloween is just around the corner. If you’re still thinking about making costumes (and I have 1 left to finish), or just want to add to your dress up trunk, then hats are the perfect way to go.
Today I’m going to give you some hat sewing tips and a round up of hat tutorials.
My favorite tip for sewing hats is to use buckram.
Buckram is a loose woven, stiffened fabric. You can find it in the utility fabric section at the fabric store. It’s sewable, flexible and lightweight, but not washable. Water removes the stiffener on the fabric, so if you wash or use heavy steam, it will wilt.
I used buckram for the brim in this hat

I also used it in the brim for this hat, which would be great if you wanted to do a newsie costume.

Another material I really like for hats is heavy weight interfacing. Depending on the hat, fusible or non-fusible might be appropriate. I used non-fusible in this hat (maybe you have an aspiring chef?):

A final material I love for Halloween hats is fleece. It doesn’t ravel, so it doesn’t have to be hemmed, and it stretches, so it’s great for hats. I used fleece to make this piglet hat, but change the shape of the ears and you could use it to make any kind of animal.

Or maybe you need a hat for yourself while you accompany your kids trick-or-treating. In that case any of these might be right up your alley.

I hope those give you some ideas for Halloween costumes if you’re still working on them! And if not, at least they could be cool dress-up bin additions.
Thanks for having me!
