Book Shelf Curtains

October 24, 2012 by Kaysi 9 Comments

When I was trying to decide on how to organize and decorate my Ikea Expedit shelves for my craft room, I needed to come up with some way to hide my supplies that weren’t super organized.  But it needed but something cute and not just a container.  So I came up with little bookshelf curtains.  And I love how they look!  No one has to know what is behind them and how messy it really is. 🙂

This is how I made them:
I took a strip of fabric and cut it 6” by 14”.

I hemmed the edges and then folded it length wise and sewed it together.  This will be where the rod goes through for the curtain.

Now for the curtain.  I cut a piece of fabric 13” by 25”.  Then I hemmed three of the sides.

For the top, I ruffled it by sewing a straight stitch on the top and pulling the bobbin thread through.

Next I sewed the two pieces together.

Using a wooden dowel, I cut it 1/4” bigger than the width of the shelf.  Since the shelf is 13” wide, I cut it 13 1/4”.

Sometimes I was a little off on my cutting, so I used vinyl bumpers to add to the width.  And sometimes I just used a dab of hot glue to hold it into place.  All three ways work great and have stayed just fine.

I put the dowel into the curtain and then hung it up into the shelf.

I used a variety of fabric for my curtains and love all of them!

I was wondering how you hung the "curtains" in that small of a space. Awesome!

As I was reading, I thought how did she find tension rods that small? What a smart idea and I know dowel rods would be cheaper! Smart and Simple! Love it!
