DIY Christmas Ugly Sweater- Mantle with Stockings
I have always wanted to go to an ugly sweater party, so this year I decided that it was time to throw one. Since I am the one that is hosting the party, I needed to make myself an ugly sweater because you can’t throw an ugly sweater and not wear an ugly sweater. So I found this idea and loved it, so I decided to make my own version of it. I’m excited about how it turned out and I can’t wait to wear it to the party this weekend!
Here is a quick video to show how I made the Christmas ugly sweater.
This is how I made it.
I started with a plain red shirt. I used a shirt because I get hot really easily and knew that a sweater would be too warm. I got a men’s shirt at Walmart, but really any plain red white will work. I then got some mini stockings (from Walmart, they were 4 for $.98!). I also got some silver tinsel for it. Lastly, I used some heat transfer vinyl because I can’t make a shirt without using HTV!
Using my Silhouette CAMEO, I cut the designs out of the heat transfer vinyl. For the fire I used the electric HTV in colors orange, red and yellow. For the wood, I used a wood texture vinyl. I believe that this one was wood texture #3. And then for the mantle and the fireplace and names, I used a stretch HTV in black and white.
Once I weeded all the vinyl, I put the vinyl onto the shirt using my heat press. I pressed each layer for 15 seconds at 305 degrees. You can also do this with an iron, just make sure you put enough pressure and heat on it that it really adheres to the fabric. With every layer, I peeled off the plastic and then put down a heat press cover sheet before pressing it.
Here is the design on the shirt, I also added names to the stockings. I thought it would be fun to make it a little more personal :).
Using a needle and thread, I sewed the stockings onto the mantle. I just basically tacked them on, just to make sure they wouldn’t fall off.
Then using a glue gun, I glued the stockings into place and then glued the tinsel onto the mantle.
And that’s it!! I love how it turned out, it’s so fun and so ugly!
The little names on the stockings are my favorite, I love them and my kids got a kick out of seeing their names on my shirt.
The shimmer of the electric HTV is amazing, I love how the colors look together. And the wood texture vinyl is perfect for the wood :).
It’s so fun on too!! Now I just have to walk around with my arms out ;).
