Do you remember when I wrote a post and said that I was going to take off the summer? And that there was some things that we going on and I told you that I was going to tell you details later. Well later has come and it’s time to tell you why life is so crazy.
If you have been following my blog, then you know that we just moved to Utah last September. We got out public accounting and into corporate accounting. When we took this job in Salt Lake, we knew that we weren’t going to be here long term. We were thinking one to two years. I was hoping more like 2. Well a job has opened up and we will be moving in the middle of August. Where to you might ask. Well it’s a pretty funny story.
I just want to start by saying I have a rule that if the town is too small for a Wal-mart to be there, then it’s too small for me. I like small towns, just not too small. Well the town that we are moving to (well actually 10 minutes away from it) doesn’t even have a population because it’s so small…. And the closest Wal-mart is 2 hours away! Our kids will go to a school in a town that has 287 people, 25 minutes away.
Yup, we are moving to the middle of no where. And we will be living on a ranch. With lots of cows as our neighbors!
In June my husband and I went there to check it out and get a feel of the area. And to see if we could really survive there. Luckily there is ranch housing, so we won’t have to find a place to live. And lucky for us, our house is nice and big!
Here is our driveway.
I haven’t seen this at a end of a driveway before…
Nice and big garage, along with a chicken coop. I have promised my oldest son that we will get some kind of pets.
Here is the little church that we will go to. It’s a little branch of about 30 to 40 people. And it’s 30 minutes away.
We are going to have to get used to driving because everything is at least 30 minutes away from our house. The closest town (of 8,000 people) is about 45 minutes away and that’s where we will do our grocery shopping.
Lots of wide open spaces. This is a lake on the way to a friend’s house (we have some friends from college that actually work at the company, yay!!)
Do you remember that episode from the Simpsons where they called Australia to see if the toilet flushes counter clock wise and the kids has to get on his bike to go check out the neighbor’s toilet and it takes him all day to do it. Well that’s about how it’s going to be when we move, our closest neighbors are about 2 miles away.
I would be lying if I said that I wasn’t nervous or scared. Being so far away from everything is going to be hard and a complete life style change. But I would be lying if I said that I wasn’t excited either. I’m excited to live a more simple life and enjoy the things that matter most in my life. I’m excited for a new adventure!
Wow! That does sound like an adventure! 🙂 I've never seen such a cute church building. Branches are a lot of fun though. We are in one now. I'm sure they'll put you right to work. 😉 Good luck with everything.
Now that is an adventure! Good luck! I can't wait to hear more about it!!
That sounds a lot like the set up my in-laws used to have. I could never do it! At least you have the internet (you will have the internet, won't you?) and all of us to help keep you company. 🙂 Good luck!!!
Wow! You are brave to make such a huge change. Best wishes to you in your move!
wow what a change!! Sounds exciting though, stock up at Joannes before you leave ;o)
Wow, that is a change from Salt Lake! We did a similar thing, my husband is an accountant, too, and we lived in Salt Lake for a year and then moved back home to the farm. But our farm is not out in the middle of no where. 🙂 Good luck, it'll be quite and adventure and make you be a little more organized – no quick run to the store for anything. lol
Best of luck to you!
I admit I haven't lived farther away than 25 minutes from Walmart (the last 10 years) but we have lived "in the sticks" for most of the last 16 years. It will certainly be different than SLC (I'm originally from Provo) Grocery shopping will take planning 🙂 Congrats on your new adventure!
That'll be a big change but I bet you'll come up with all kinda of fun stuff to do out there that us city folk would have never dreamed of. We'll miss seeing your cute face at the meet ups
If the new location is where I think it is, you will find that the area has it's own unique culture. Although I imagine a lot has changed in the last year or so… Good luck with your move! No where can be fun. 🙂
wow- what an adventure! Good luck!
what an exciting / scary opportunity. I love the idea of that kind of move. As long as you have internet you will still stay connected. Does Walmart have an online option?
I laughed when I saw the cattle grid at the end of the driveway. It sure has been a long while since I saw one of those since I have lived in cities for over 20 years. They are (or at least were) quite common in rural areas when I was growing up (Australia). As as the name suggests, they are grids to keep cattle from crossing into an area without having to get out of the car an open and close gates all the time. There was the occasional wily old cow that could actually jump the grid (the grass is greener on the other side) but most stayed put on the other side of the fence which is kinda nicer than having them in the house yard and eating your fresh grown vegies. 🙂
Oh it will definitely be a change for everyone, but you will have time to enjoy the important things in life. Just make sure you double check that grocery list. 😉
I would love to live in a place like that, good luck to you and your family and cannot wait to read about how you guys adjust to the change.
Good luck, Kaysi!! Your new home looks beautiful and it will be a simpler life.
But, maybe one that unveils all kinds of new possibilities. I hope you can stick
with the positive excited part more than the nervous. God will surely make you
Bloom where you are planted.. That's not easy for me to say, I may have to move in
a couple months,as well, and to, I don't know where, but I do know it will be to
serve his purpose. Let's just hope we both have a good Internet connection..LOL!!
Much Love and Many Blessings!
~Theresa.
Kaysi, yes, change – any change – can be scary and nerve wracking – but be as open minded as the land you are moving to – find the advantages and make the most of them – just remember to keep your gas tank on FULL each trip into "town?" We are 20 miles from anything as well, but we're down to only one cow now, which has become our 600 lb plus pet 🙂 named Suzie Cow. Please come enter my first giveaway!
take care!
JoAnn
Best wishes to you and your family, Kaysi! This kind of life is actually how I grew up and there were way more advantages than not! I felt that way even then too 😉 What I wouldn't give to be able to raise my own family back there now. Your new branch will be over the moon to have you there! I'm anxious to hear about how it goes and how you like it!
that is my dream. how exciting for you. congratulations!!! by the way, what state is that in?
ps- will you still have internet out there? hahaha, jk. i grew up in south dakota and constantly got teased. 🙂
Wow! That sounds like quite a change you have coming up. As someone who came from a very small town, it definitely has its positives and negatives. I'm sure you all will find ways to adapt and make the best of the situation. Can't wait to hear how it goes.
