Valentine’s Day…. I’m not a huge fan of the day. I don’t usually do much for it, but this year creating is what is keeping me going, so I decided to make a fun shirt for my little girl. I wanted it to be for Valentine’s day but not so much that she couldn’t wear it at a different time of the year. So I went with a ruffly heart, you can’t go wrong with ruffles.
I love this picture of my little girl, her skirt was blowing in the wind and it was just making her laugh. I love capturing moments like these!
This is how I made it:
I just took a regular t-shirt that I got from a craft store. I think it was about $2. I love stocking up on shirts like these, so many possibilities.
I cut out several strips of fabric, they were 3/4” wide. I went with a super cute Riley Blake fabric called Hello Sunshine.
With a zig zag stitch, I stitch all of the edges, to help prevent fraying.
Then I used a long straight stitched and sewed right down the middle. I pulled the bobbin thread through and gathered the strip to make some ruffles.
I cut out some heat n bond applique material. I pinned the ruffles onto that.
Once all of the ruffles were on, I ironed it on.
To make sure that the ruffles stayed, I sewed all of them onto the paper.
I cut a heart out of card stock and then used it to cut out my ruffles.
I then took off the paper on the back of the heart. I’m not going to lie, there was some paper left over, not much, but some.
I ironed the heart onto the shirt.
Then using a zig zag stitch, I sewed the heart onto the shirt. I did sew some of the middle too, just to make sure it wasn’t going to go anywhere when I wash it.
Since I was using just a regular t-shirt, I wanted to girly up the sleeves a little bit. I did this by just using elastic thread in the bobbin of my sewing machine and using my longest straight stitch setting. The elastic thread gathers it automatically!
And that’s it!
I love ruffles!
She loves her new shirt! She had fun feeling and playing with all of the ruffles.
I even made her a fun skirt to go with it, it’s just a square circle skirt with three layers. For full tutorial on skirt, go here.

Very cute! Someday I'm going to have to try making these ruffles you always do. That is a really cool trick with the elastic thread on the sleeves.

I made dress similar to this when my daughter was little (she turns 25 in 3 weeks. Some times I had to bribe her to take one off so I could wash it, she just loved them.
