Technology is everywhere around us, and it seems to be getting bigger and better everyday. It is helping us is so many ways that I never could have imagined. It’s nice to be connected to the world at anytime of the day. I have gotten the latest in the phones and tablets but some reason I haven’t done much with my house, until now. I didn’t realize how many devices there are to make your house a smarthome. I didn’t realize how easy they were to install and how cool and awesome they are! I got a couple devices from Honeywell that are great and so nice to have in my house! I got the Lyric™ Wi-Fi Water Leak and Freeze Detector and a Lyric™ Thermostat. Both were easy to install and they will make my life a lot easier.
Here are the two products that I installed. Both connect to your Wi-Fi and you can control them through your phone.
This is how you install the Lyric™ Wi-Fi Water Leak and Freezer Detector. First you download the Lyric™ app on your phone and then add a new device and pick the leak detector. Add the batteries to the detector and then put the back cover back on.
Once the cover is on, there will be a blue light that flashes. Push next to start the set up process (you will need Bluetooth to be on).
Once you have connected the device, you will then connect to a Wi-Fi network. Make sure that the Wi-Fi network is connecting at only 2.4 GHz (compared to 5GHz). In our case, that was our network that was not for our media.
Once you have the detector connected with your Wi-Fi, determine where you want it to go. You can have several different detectors in your home that you name for the place it is in. I chose our water heater and furnace room because it is directly above my living room and fireplace and if it leaks it can do a lot of damage. Plus it’s in its own little room that I rarely go into to and check, so having the detector there will be a huge help. I wanted it mounted onto the wall, so I put a screw into the wall.
Then I put it directly onto the wall. I then added the sensor cable onto it and put it around the water heater.
And that’s it!! It was super easy to install and it gives me peace of mind that my water heater won’t leak without me knowing about it. I am thinking that it would be great to have one by my washer too just in case that starts leaking.
How it works is if there is any moisture or water it will start beeping and then send you a notification on your phone that says that there is a leak detected.
The detector won’t prevent a leak but if one happens if will immediately alert you so you can do something about it before the damage is out of control. It can also detect if there is possible dampness that may cause frozen pipes. This is pretty huge because coming from Wyoming I understand cold weather in the winters and frozen pipes is a pretty common problem. So anytime you can be alerted of something like that happening before they happen is pretty huge! The detector has a three year battery life and if it does detect a leak, you can use it again after resetting it, drying and cleaning it and changing the batteries. All you have to do is install it and then let it do its thing while you go about your busy life.
Speaking about busy life, is there ever a time that you are lying in bed and you are super hot or super cold? You just don’t want to get out of bed because you’ve had a long day and your feet hurt and the thermostat is on the other side of the house. This happens to me all the time and luckily now I don’t have to get up because I can just grab my phone and change the temperature and it’s pretty awesome!
Thanks to the Lyric™ Thermostat I can now do that.
Here’s how to install one. Lyric™ will work with common 24 volts systems but will not work if you have electric baseboard heating. C-wires are required if you use it with Apple® HomeKit™. If you have an older home (or a non digital thermostat) you may want to check to see if you have a C-wire in your current thermostat.
The very first step is to turn off your furnace and AC breaker. *****Do this!! Or you may blow a fuse like we did!*****
Once that is off, you can take off the plate of your old thermostat. Take a picture of it so you can see where the wires go because you will want it to be the same for the new thermostat.
Using the Lyric™ app, you can mark the colors too.
Disconnect all the wires and remove the old plate.
Now to install the Lyric™ thermostat. Put the wall cover onto the wall and determine where to drill holes into the wall (you may have to use anchors if there is no stud). Put the wall plate into the wall cover and then push the wires through the middle.
Using the Lyric™ app as a guide, reconnect all the wires into the right letters.
Using the level on the wall plate, make sure it is level and then screw the plate into the wall.
Attach the thermostat onto the wall plate.
Using the Lyric™ app connect and set up the thermostat. It is really important that you connect the thermostat to Wi-Fi that connects with 2.4GHz and not 5GHz. It will not connect if you are using a network that isn’t 2.4 (we learned from experience).
And that’s it!! Easy to install and it’s looks really awesome and fancy.
The best part is that you can control and check the temperature on your phone. You can set it up so that it will change the temperature based on your location. For example, if you’re at work all day then you can program it to increase the temperature (in the summer) during the day and before you get home it will turn on the AC so when you get home it’s nice and cool. It’s a great way to save energy and money. It will also send you alerts to change filters or if there are extreme temperatures. You can also set up shortcuts so you can change settings with just one touch of button. It is also compatible is Apple® HomeKit™ and Samsung® SmartThings™
If you’ve been thinking about turning your house into a smarthome, these two products are a great way to go! They are easy to install and on the Honeywell Lyric™ website there are some awesome FAQ answers that can really help along the way, plus an awesome support team to help you install it (I know from experience :D). Both of them can give you peace of mind and save you energy and money. For more information make sure to check out the Honeywell website.
