Tutorial Tuesday: THREE shirt

January 31, 2012 by Kaysi 18 Comments

This past week my youngest son turned 3!  I of course had to make him a special birthday shirt, so when I saw this simple idea, I knew that I wanted to make it for him.
This is how I made it:
1) I took two different shirts.  One I got at Walmart for $1 and then polo shirt I found at a garage sale for about $.25.  It was too small anyway, so it was prefect for this.
2) I cut the polo shirt up
3) I took one of the sides and ironed fabric interfacing to it (just the regular kind you find at a craft store).
4) I put both sides together and then put a 3 on top.  I just cut the 3’s out with scissors.
There are the two 3’s
5) I ironed on one of the 3’s.  I only did one because I wanted the top layer to be able to move.
6) I sewed the top three onto the shirt.  I love how the edges are folded over.
7) For the three, I used my CAMEO and my heat transfer vinyl from Expressions Vinyl.  I cut out the word and then completely removed it from the plastic.
8) With white paint, I distressed the letters.
9) I put the letters back onto the plastic and then ironed it onto the shirt.
Here it is all done.
And now my cute boy has a fun birthday shirt!
He looks so grown up!
I did wash this shirt and the paint did just fine on the heat transfer 🙂

Oh, wow, I absolutely LOVE this. I'm pinning it for my son's next birthday. When he turned 3 last August, we painted a birthday shirt for him, which was fun, but I think this looks even better! Would you consider sharing it here?
