Have you ever heard of Cami Secret? Well I hadn’t until last week when my sister told me about it. I went to their website, looked at it and immediately thought, “I can make that!” and so you can you. It’s super easy!
It’s a great alternative to wearing a tank top. It just hooks around your bra strap.
This is how I made it:
1) Measure the distance between your bra straps, then depending on how tight across you would like it, subtract 1/2 to 1/4 inch. I measured 8 3/4″ so I cut the piece of fabric 8 1/2″, so the top won’t sag at all. This will be the distance at the top of the fabric. Then cut the fabric in a triangle shape about 8-10 inches down.
2) Now for the elastic, I cut two 1 1/2″ pieces and sewed them onto the back of the fabric. This is a pretty snug fit, if you would like to be more adjustable cut the elastic 2″ long.
3) Then I sewed Velcro onto the back of the fabric, over the elastic. I used two 2″ strips of the soft side for the inside to make it adjustable. I then sewed two little 1/2″ pieces of the rough side onto the elastic.
4) For some extra cuteness, I put some lace onto the top on the fabric and sewed it onto the front of the fabric.
That’s it, it’s so easy and I great alternative for a tank top!!
I liked it so much, that I made another one, with lace
I love how it looks on, you can’t tell that it’s not a tank top.
Here are a few reasons I prefer it instead of a tank top:
-You don’t have to keep adjusting it
-It goes straight across, I love that look
-When I bend down, I don’t flash everyone
-It’s great for under a dress so you don’t have that horrible line at your waist from a tank top
-Not have to deal with another layer while nursing

I am so making one today…I hate the bulk of a tank and another layer, but flashing isn't cool either…great solution.

Ok, so my mom got me some cami secrets, and I'm not very impressed, they say one size fits all, and I have very broad shoulders for my 5"1' frame, but they are so wide that I end up flashing everyone, so I had to readjust mine anyway, this is a MUCH better alternative because then it ACTUALLY fits!

Very nice! Much cheaper then the ones on TV too!!
Catherine
Great idea! Thanks for sharing it!
Ann
This is great– I saw the on TV ones too but didn't like the colors too much-great idea! Do they hook right onto the bra strap?
Donnie
That really looks doable the way you explained it. Thanks. Great idea.

I just saw one of these a couple of weeks ago and wanted one! Thanks for sharing your tutorial!

Ann-
The elastic hooks around your bra strap then you just velcro it to keep it in place

Super cute idea. Thanks for sharing! I'm going to have to try this.

This is fantastic! I've been wanting to make one of these for the last few months since Josh told me about them. I just wasn't innovative enough to figure out how. I'm so glad you could show me! Another awesome thing about these is when it's way hot in the summer, you don't have that extra layer.

Great idea to make them yourself. I almost bought them at Target the other day. I'm so glad I didn't.

I saw something like this at Walmart a while ago and thought "I could totally make one of those…" Now I know how. Thanks! 🙂

Great idea!! I'm often wishing I didn't have the bulk of wearing a tank underneath certain things. This is the perfect alternative!

Oh I love this idea. I hate wearing camis because they don't stay and are constantly sliding down further than I'm comfortable with. Thank you for sharing this.

Genius! I'm always running out of tank-tops by the end of the week! It seems to be a constant problem. Why can't they just make shirts that don't show so much? I love your solution. Great tutorial!

Thanks for creating this. My 17 year old has been wanting some new camisoles. Now I have a solution. Time to dig into the stash. I'd love to feature you post on my blog. Let me know if that's okay. I'll make sure I link you back. 🙂

I saw this in a store once. It came in a pack of three with different colors. I forget what they were called, but it was a similar idea. The only problem was that I thought they were too expensive. Now, I can make them thanks to you!

Such brilliance!!! I love them and I will be making one in every color of the rainbow!! I hope you don't mind, but I linked to this project in my own blog today, and you can find the link here: http://myhandmadehell.blogspot.com/2011/01/reconstructed-clothes-round-up.html

The Iowa Farmer's Wife
Such a great idea! I just saw the commercial for these over Christmas. I might just have to make one! I wear a tank under EVERYTHING!
AmieAnn
This is such an awesome idea especially for the summer! (although I am ALWAYS cold and need that extra layer) Thanks for sharing with the Pink Hippo Party!

You know…I JUST bought a few cute dresses from a thrift store the other day that I haven't been able to wear yet because I didn't have anything to wear under it to keep from flashing people some cleavage!! Now, I have a solution…thank you. Thanks for linking up to Mad Skills Monday!
Jennifer
Interesting. I've never seen this type of thing before. I have sewn a little triangle of fabric into low shirts before but I never thought to make one that you could switch from shirt to shirt.
AUDRA
So perfect! Thanks for sharing during socialize with me Monday til Sunday! 🙂

I just ran across your blog and you are my new hero! These are great! Can't wait to look around your site more…thanks!

I have a couple of the cami secret ones and they don't work with the bras I wear! I thought the same thing – "I can make this" – it has been on my project list for a while and it is so awesome to see what you did. So, is the velcro at all itchy? I would think velcro would be easier than snaps!
rosemagnificent
Thank you. I need these as I have had a masectomy and many necklines no longer work!!! The clip on Cami Secrets don't work for me. Someone gave me some with three sets of snaps on one side (so I can choose how high the neckline goes) and I can't find them again. Great to be able to make my own!

It really looks good to wear different style of tank top. tank tops in different style looks awesome with stylish topheels.

I've heard that the cami-secrets don't work for large chested women like me, so thanks for the tutorial on how to make my own! I saw a youtube video of a woman who used fancy underwear, so the lace was already attached! I've also been thinking about permanently attaching one to a bra, to make my own cami-bra. Have you ever tried that?
