DIY Uma from Descendants 2 Costume

My family is obsessed with Descendants 2. We love the movie (including myself, I bought the soundtrack and have it on my phone playing all the time). On Halloween we love doing family costumes but last year we didn’t do anything :(. Well this year I was excited to suggest doing a semi theme (not everyone was on board, which is fine) and doing Descendants. It’s nice that there are so many COOL characters that are both boy and girls. We have had issues in the past because my daughter likes certain things, but my boys don’t or vice versa. Descendants is something that everyone likes and there are so many characters that they get to pick their favorite. Well my 4 year old picked Harry Hook and so he begged me to be Uma with him. So to make him happy, I made myself an Uma costume :). You can make this for an adult or a child, that’s the joy of making it :).

This costume has several different parts to it. I love how it all came together and actually looks like Uma :).

For the jacket I found an old leather jacket from Goodwill. I loved the look and style of this one and thought it would be a good Uma jacket.

The first thing I did was painted it. I used a texture paint that is kinda like a chalk paint. I wouldn’t recommend using it, just use a basic acrylic one, they are cheaper and work better with the leather. The paint gets stiff and cracks.

I did the whole jacket in a base color of an aqua clue. Then on the flap I took my glue gun and drew some shapes, like a star and dots.

Then I painted the flaps gold. I LOVE the gold. I also did some gold on the sleeves and shoulders.

I then wanted the jacket to look more distress and colorful, so I painted it all over with some teal and gold paint. I was very random when I painted it. I tried to blend it as much as I could.

I then added some purple tassels to the shoulders. I just glued them on with a glue gun and then added a boarder around the gold and painted the glue gold too.

Now time for the skirt and shirt.

For the skirt I got some white knit fabric. I got 1 1/2 yards of it. I also got some white netting (1 1/2 yards of that too). I measured around my waist and then added a 3 inches to get the width of the fabric. Then length is roughly 22 inches (but it all depends on where you want it to land). I cut the netting the same (but it’s folded, so there are actually two layers of netting) and then I cut some knit fabric into 1/2-1 inch strips (they were about 22 inches long).

I sewed everything together on the top, including the netting.

Then I folded it in half and sewed up the side of it (I turned it inside out before sewing it). Then I used some elastic (the size of your waist) and sewed that into a circle.

I sewed the elastic on and now the skirt is made (not done but made :D). For the shirt I just about a white cami tank.

I wanted the skirt and shirt to be blue/aqua, I dyed them using Rit Dye. I used the color aquamarine but teal would look good too I think. What you do is fill a big pot about 3/4 full and then warm it on the stove. Then you add the dye. I added about 2/3 of the bottle but I don’t think you need that much. Then you added a cup of salt.

Once it is warm, you put in the fabric and warm it for 30 minutes. When it’s done, you rinse it with warm water and then wash in a washer.

I wanted it to look more like the jacket, so I added some teal, gold and dark purple to the tassels on the skirt. Then I painted the netting gold in areas too.

Using my CAMEO I cut out some white iron on vinyl and added a skull to the shirt.

I then painted the shirt with the same teal and gold to make it match everything else.

Now for the hair.

Uma has beautiful and long aqua braids, so I used an aqua colored yarn for it. For each braid I used 9 strands that were around 45 inches long. I tied up the end and then braided the yarn (3 to braid section), then about 6 inches from the bottom, I tied the end to leave the yarn loose.

I used up the all the yarn, there were 41 braids :).

I then got a pirate hat and glued the hair inside of it.

And that’s it!! Here is the costume all complete and all the things that went into it.

The jacket, shirt and skirt all put together with three belts that I got from a Goodwill. I also added a regular purple shirt to go under the tank.

I then got some fingerless gloves (or you can get regular gloves and cut the tips)

I love all the details that this costume has and all colors that come together.

And here is what it looks on! I love it and can’t wait to wear on Halloween! I guarantee while I am wearing this I will be belting out What’s My Name?!!
