Whenever there is a holiday or a big event, I love to make my kids matching clothes to wear. It usually just consists of ties for the boys and then a skirt for my daughter. Recently we blessed our new baby, so I wanted to make everyone something out of this super fabric that I had. I loved the colors. I didn’t have enough of the butterfly fabric, so I thought that it would be fun to make a skirt that had the three different fabrics. One of my favorite to make is the circle skirt, I love how it lays and how easy it is. So I made her a circle skirt with the three fabrics and then ragged the seams.
This is how I made it:
For the full tutorial on the circle skirt, go here.
To make the pattern, I measured her waist and length. They were 20 inches and 10 inches. Because you are going to sew several pieces together, you need to add 4 to 5 inches to the waist. I divided 25 by 6.28 and that was around 3 3/4 inches (the radius of the circle). The first line is to 3 3/4 inches. The second line is 13 3/4 inches, that is the length added to the radius.
I cut on the line. The pattern is for 1/4 circle, and I want an 1/8 circle. So I folded it in half.
Using the pattern I made, I cut the eight pieces of fabric.
I put the backs of the fabric together and sewed it. The seams were only 3/8”.
I continued to sew the 8 pieces together and it made the circle. Isn’t it so much fun?!
And now for the rag, I cut the seam every 1/2 inch.
I then hemmed the bottom of the skirt. Use an iron to fold the bottom down, it’s much easier.
Then I added a piece of elastic to the waist. The elastic was 20” long.
And that’s it! So fun!
I threw the skirt in the washer and dryer to get the raggy look.
I love how it looks with the frayed edges!
And here are my 5 kids at the blessing.
Here are the four ties that I made for my boys. For the full tutorial on how to make these, go here.
