Every week when the trash and recycling trucks come to our house to pick up our garbage, I am amazed by how much waste we produce. Since it is Earth month this month, it’s time to start thinking about making less waste, recycling more and leaving less of a mark on our planet. We always have so many boxes that we get rid of all the time, so I decided to upcycle one to make a cute container for my kids’ bathroom. I’ve been wanting a pop of orange in there but have had a hard time finding a container that worked, so this upcycle was perfect. It was the perfect color, didn’t cost me a thing and it was one less thing I didn’t have to toss.

I decided to make a tooth paste holder because I don’t like putting tooth paste in the drawers (it always makes a huge mess) and putting it into a cute container makes it look better than just being on the counter. I headed to Target to get some toothpaste for my kids and I picked up some Tom’s of Maine products.

Right now there is a Cartwheel offer that you can get 10% off of the four products that are exclusive to Target: Tom’s of Maine Bar & Body, Children’s Gel, Toddler Value Pack and Adult Deodorant.

I ended up getting some of the Tom’s of Maine Children’s Gel for my kids and then I got the Rapid Relief Sensitive Gel for me. Tom’s of Maine products have no artificial colors or fragrances, the products are flavored by fresh fruits, herbs and flowers. The packaging is made from recyclable through TerraCycle and 10% of their profits go to human and environmental goodness. They are a company that is truly trying to make the earth a better place.

This is how I made the fun upcycled containers
I cut some food boxes to the size that I wanted. I taped up the sides that could open, for more support. Then I went to my stash of fabric and found a fun orange one.

I cut a piece of fabric that was big enough that it could cover the box, inside and outside.

I glued the fabric onto the bottom of the box and then glued the front and back of the box. I then cut out corners of the fabric, since I didn’t need it.

I then glued the rest of the fabric onto the box. For a more clean, finished look inside the box, I cut a piece of card stock to put into the bottom of the box.

Then I cut 4 more pieces of card stock and put them on the sides of the inside of the box, just to give it a more finished look.

And that’s it! It was super easy to make and it’s super cute! I added the toothpaste to it and then some mouth wash.

Doesn’t it look great on my counter?! Perfect for my kids to get their tooth paste and then super easy for them to put it away too!

Don’t love things on the counter tops (I really don’t either!) then you can add some velcro strips to the back of it and put it inside the vanity door. Super easy and a great space saver if you don’t have room under the vanity.

Since it’s Earth Month, it’s time to think about ways to product less waste, you can do something like this or something else but let’s start thinking about the Earth and not just ourselves. I challenge you to join the #LessWasteChallenge and try to reduce 1 lb of waste each week by upcycling and recycling! And make sure to purchase Tom’s of Maine products at Target for great, Earth friendly products. Visit Toms of Maine’s website for more information.
