Lately I have seen I lot of people around the blogosphere make shirts. Since I really don’t know what I’m doing half the time when I’m sewing, I was very scared and intimidated by making a shirt for myself. Finally one day I just decided to try it. I figured the worse that could happen is I would waste some time and a little money on fabric, not a big deal.
So this is the shirt that I came up with.
This is how I made it.
To determine the width of the shirt, I measured myself around at the hips and bust (that’s where I’m biggest). I took the bigger number and then added 5 or 6 inches to it.
For the bottom part of the shirt, I cut two pieces of fabric, measuring 20″x14″ (that’s how long I wanted it to be). Then I sewed the sides together
Next I cut out several 4″ strips for the ruffles. I then pinned them onto the shirt. I didn’t ruffled them beforehand because I was lazy and just gathered them as I was sewing them.
I worked my way up the shirt.

Next I cut out two pieces of fabric for the top. I had the same width as the bottom, 20″ and then made it 14″ long. I put the two together and sewed the sides.
Next I took the top of the shirt and put the bottom inside, making sure that the front were facing each other and then I sewed them together.
Next came the arm holes. I did this just like I did for a pillowcase dress. I tried the shirt on and marked where I wanted the hole to go.
I folded the shirt in half and then I cut out the hole. Then I hemmed the edges.
Now for the neckline, I wanted to do something different, so I decided on a weave. I cut out 5 strips about 1″ thick.
I tried the 5 strips together.
Using this tutorial, I made a 5 stranded weave.
I pinned it onto the shirt to make the straps. I sewed it on.
And that’s it! It was pretty easy to do. It’s not the most flattering shirt but it’s comfy and when I’m having a “fat day” I can wear it 🙂
I wanted a little bit more color, so I whipped up a t-shirt cardigan to go over it.
